Congratulations to the ACRC research team for winning the First Place award
in the prestigious SIM 2004 International Paper Competition. The Paper will be
presented at the opening session of SIM's Annual Conference, SIMposium, to be
held on September 13, 2004 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
In a case entitled "Stepping up the Value Chain: TAL Apparel Limited",
Dr Ali Farhoomand and Phoebe Ho, in collaboration with Dr. Harry Lee, Managing
Director,TAL Apparel Limited, explain how a no-name Hong Kong-based apparel
manufacturer has used Information Technology strategically to gain competitive
advantage in the intensely cut-throat global apparel industry. The paper shows
how the company has developed a sophisticated information management system to
manage the supply chain of its major retailer customers, while at the same time,
provide backward integration into its own production and material sourcing networks.
The initiative carries significant strategic implications for industry practitioners,
highlighting the way a traditionally weak member in a global industry can use IT
to step up the value chain.
